Monitoring without management is a pager

A monitoring-only tool produces alerts and stops. That is genuinely useful for infrastructure a specialist team already administers by other means, and it is close to worthless for a managed fleet, because the value of knowing a disk is nearly full is entirely in clearing it before anyone notices. On a fleet of a thousand machines, alerts without remediation become a queue that grows faster than a team can drain it, and the standard failure follows: the alerts get muted, and then the one that mattered is muted too. So when a tier is cheap, check what it can DO rather than what it can see. A tier that alerts but cannot script, patch or take control is priced for a different job than the one an MSP has.

What to check before you standardise on one

Three things decide this in practice and none is on a pricing page. How the agent behaves on a bad connection, because a laptop on hotel wifi is the normal case rather than the edge case. How long a routine job takes in the console, because a technician doing it forty times a day pays for every extra click. And what happens to an alert nobody acknowledges, because escalation that works is the difference between monitoring and a screensaver. Run a trial against real machines on real networks before committing.
